Flag of Baden-Württemberg
The flag of Baden-Württemberg was created in 1952, after the merger of the German states of (South) Baden, Württemberg-Baden, and Württemberg-Hohenzollern, which had been created by the occupying forces after World War II. (More info)
Flag of Bavaria
There are two official flags of Bavaria: the striped type and the lozenge type, both of which are blue and white. Both flags are historically associated with the royal Bavarian Wittelsbach family, which ruled Bavaria from 1180 to 1918. (More info)
Flag of Berlin
The state flag of Berlin, Germany has three stripes of red-white-red, the two outer stripes each occupying a fifth of its height, the middle the remaining three-fifths. It is emblazoned with a bear on the civil flag, while it bears the coat of arms of Berlin on the state flag. (More info)

Flag of Bremen
The flag of Bremen (used by both the city of Bremen, Germany, and the state Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, Germany) consists of at least eight equal horizontal stripes of red alternating with white, and checked at the hoist. It is colloquially known as Speckflagge (bacon flag). (More info)
Flag of Hamburg
The civil flag of Hamburg shows a white castle with three towers on red background, which is used as a civil flag as a state flag for most purposes. (It was historically used as civil ensign as well.) The flag was adopted in 1834. (More info)
Flag of Hesse
The civil flag of Hesse, Germany, consists of a bicolour of a red top and a bottom white stripe, in the proportion 3:5. The state flag is similar, except it is emblazoned with the state coat of arms in the centre. The flag was adopted on the 4th of August 1948. (More info)

The flag of Lower Saxony consists of the flag of the Federal Republic of Germany in Schwarz-Rot-Gold, with the coat of arms of Lower Saxony, shifted slightly toward the hoist. The flag was adopted in 1951. (More info)
Flag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
The civil flag that serves as the symbol of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, consists of five horizontal stripes, that are from the top to bottom: blue (ultramarine), white, yellow, white, and red (vermilion). It was designed by Norbert Buske and adopted on 29 January 1991. (More info)
Flag of North Rhine-Westphalia
The flag of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia is a horizontal tricolour consisting of green, white and red. After the establishment of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1946, the tricolour was first introduced in 1948, but was not formally adopted until 1953. (More info)
Flag of Rhineland-Palatinate
The flag of Rhineland-Palatinate, is a tricolour of three horizontal bands of black, red and gold. These colours are Germany's national colours and are sometimes referred to as schwarz-rot-gold. The flag of Saarland is based on the flag of Germany and is a black, red, and gold horizontal tricolour. In the centre of the flag is the coat of arms of Saarland. The flag was adopted in 1957. (More info)
Flag of Saxony
Both the civil and state flag of the German state of Saxony feature a bicolour of white over green, similar to the Austrian province of Styria although they are historically not related to each other. The state flag is defaced in the centre with the coat of arms of Saxony. (More info)
Flag of Saxony-Anhalt
The flag of Saxony-Anhalt is a yellow and black bi-colour, with the state's coat of arms centred on the flag. The flag was adopted on the 30th January 1991 and changed in 2017 to avoid confusion with Baden-Württemberg. (More info)

Flag of Thuringia
Both the civil and state flag of the German state of Thuringia feature a bicolour of white over red. Introduced with the formation of the state of Thuringia within the Weimar Republic in 1920, it is the reverse of the flag of Hesse, both flags ultimately reflecting the heraldic colours of the Ludovingian rulers of the medieval Duchy of Thuringia.
